LOCAL COMMUNITY AGAINST DEEP MINING VENTURE IN NATIONAL PARK

The local community has refused to accept a planned copper mine, located in one of the games reserves in Zambia.
The local community fears that the mine, once set up, will affect the eco-system in the area.
Zambia Community-based Natural Resource Management Forum, says the Kangaluwi large scale copper mining venture will affect the water table in the respective game management area.
Mwembeshi Resources Limited has planned the respective multi-million dollars deep-mining project for set up in the Lower Zambezi National Park, in Luangwa district of Lusaka province.
But the local community has contended that the company did not outline the full truth in its Environmental Impact Assessment report as submitted to the environment monitoring agency.
The parameters of the eco-system disturbances are bound to affect regional countries, all of which are Zambia’s neighbours and whose eco-systems depend on the Zambezi river.
Among the outlined adverse effects on the natural environment will be water, air and noise pollution, resulting from the processing of the metals to be mined.
The natural terrain, which is supportive of the wildlife and other pieces of the eco-system will also gravely affected.
