The Zambian telecommunications giant, ZAMTEL
has assured continued expansion and stable operations, despite being the centre
of the current shareholding tension between government and LAP Green network.
The company’s newly appointed Chief
Executive, Mupanga Mwanakatwe says ZAMTEL remains committed to the continued
extensive network expansion programme and the growth of its customer base.
This is despite the Zambian government’s
forceful, but legally binding takeover of the company from LAP Green of Libya,
which had a 75 per cent management control stake.
The takeover came after revelations that the
firm was partially privatised by the past Rupiah Banda regime under irregular,
illegally, illegitimate and fraudulent processes.
But assuring the public, Dr Mwanakatwe says
an aggressive growth path will be pursued, adding that operations have
continued to run smoothly since he assumed office on January 25.
ZAMTEL is Zambia’s leading communication
solutions provider offering fixed line, mobile and broadband services.
Meanwhile, LAP Green Network has indicated
that it has commenced legal action against the Zambian government, after it
repossessed the Libyan multi-national company’s 75 per cent stake in ZAMTEL.
