At
least 1,021 Zambian minors engaged in child labour in the hospitality sector
risk being lured into prostitution.
This
is according to the national child labour policy for the period 2010 and 2015 themed
Securing
A Better Future For Our Children.
The
gloomy picture is in the backdrop of an estimated 67 per cent extreme poverty
levels, which manifests in at least 5.2 million people being unemployed, factors
cited as causes of child destitution.
The
policy has further disclosed that an estimated 47 per cent of Zambian children
are economically active and engaged in child labour, a vice which is described
as alarmingly becoming a national socio problem.
In
particular statistics, 801 girls and 220 boys are currently employed in the
hotel and restaurant sector, who risk engaging in commercial sex and
pornography making.
On the other hand 16,000 children are engaged in
the trade and retail sectors
