An estimated 255 million people in Least Developed
Countries –LDCs- risk living under extreme poverty conditions by 2015.
Africa will account for at least 59 per cent of the
respective LDCs global population to be afflicted by extreme poverty.
This is according to a report released by the United
Nations Conference on Trade and Development –UNCTAD.
The recently launched report is titled the
Potential Role of South to South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable
Development.
UNCTAD further
says the gloomy picture of extreme poverty in LDCs is despite the respective
nations grouping’s strides in achieving the Millennium Development Goals –MDGs.
In the report, the global UN agency for trade and
related matters has elaborated that the figure is however estimated on a higher
side of at least 439 million if LDCs fail to meet the first MDG of eradicating
extreme poverty and hunger.
