Former labour Minister in the Rupiah Banda regime is to be questioned
over a huge amount of money cash found buried at his private property in the
capital, Lusaka.
This follows a combined team of law enforcement officers, who yesterday
unearthed and seized 2.1 billion kwacha at Austin Liato’s farm in Lusaka’s
Mwembeshi area.
Working on a tip, officers from the Police, Anti-Corruption Commission
and the Drug Enforcement Commission recovered the money, which was concealed in
two safes and two metal trunks.
The law enforcement officers are now expected to question Mr Liato over
the money, which is suspected to have been corruptly obtained and held in
contravention of the Banking and Financial Services Act.
And Police Inspector-General, Martin Malama has re-affirmed that the law enforcement
wings will continue with its invigorated anti-corruption crusade further
stating that there is therefore no need to suspect witch-hunting.
The police Chief has also said that all suspects are innocent until proven
guilty by the courts of law reiterating the ruling out of political motive in
the anti-corruption crusade, which has become top of President Michael Sata’s
new government.
