31 Zambians have been arrested for
illegal fishing activities in Zimbabwe.
The AFRICA NEWS reports that Zimbabwean
police arrested the Zambians for poaching fish in prohibited zones along the Zambezi River.
Police have also seized eight
commercial fishing rigs belonging to the Zambians during an anti-poaching
operation with the Zimbabwe
Parks and Wildlife
Management Authority.
The Authority’s Spokesperson, Caroline
Washaya Moyo says some of those arrested have since appeared in court and have
been fined 4,000 dollars each to retrieve the fishing rigs.
The 31 fish poachers, who are aged between
the ages of 14 and 27, have managed to secure the release of five rigs and are
yet to clear fines for the remaining three.
The Zimbabweans say they have a
number of challenges in policing the water border with Zambia.
