MOPANI ‘FACES’ LEGAL ACTION OVER POLLUTION

Mopani Copper Mines might be taken to court by a local trade ethics monitoring and advocacy non-governmental organisation.
This is over the GLENCORE International-owned Zambia located mining entity’s acts of environmental pollution in 2008 and 2011.
The Centre for Trade Policy and Development has stated this position in a letter availed in Lusaka.
Mopani has since been challenged to explain what has been described as allegations of environmental recklessness and tax avoidance, which the mining company however denies.
The respective NGO has further dared Mopani to choose to explain or be taken to court.
In 2008 and 2011, Mufulira residents reported ill effects due to suspected acid in drinking water.
Konkola Copper Mines was recently fined 10 billion kwacha over similar acts of environmental pollution in Mufulira.
