Mopani Copper Mines might be taken to court
by a local trade ethics monitoring and advocacy non-governmental organisation.
This is over the GLENCORE International-owned
Zambia located mining entity’s acts of environmental pollution in 2008 and
2011.
The Centre for Trade Policy and Development
has stated this position in a letter availed in Lusaka.
Mopani has since been challenged to explain
what has been described as allegations of environmental recklessness and tax
avoidance, which the mining company however denies.
The respective NGO has further dared Mopani to choose to explain or be taken to court.

In 2008 and 2011, Mufulira residents reported
ill effects due to suspected acid in drinking water.
Konkola Copper Mines
was recently fined 10 billion kwacha over similar acts of environmental
pollution in Mufulira.
