Local
Government, Housing, Early Education and Environmental Protection Minister, Nkandu
Luo has warned investors against polluting the environment.
Professor
Luo says some investors, flouting environmental protection laws, have
unfortunately not been punished by previous governments.
She
has cited the frequent pollution of water and roads by investors, who transport
toxic materials used in the mines.
She
observed that such cases have long term effects on the environment and the health
of people.
Professor
Luo was speaking in Ndola’s Maposa area, where an unknown truck spilled materials
used to manufacture sulphur dioxide.
Meanwhile,
an environmentalist has appealed to government to re-consider constituting a
separate ministry for environmental protection issues.
The
appeal is from Zambia Institute of Environmental Management Executive Director,
Morgan Katati.
Mr
Katati has observed that embedding environmental issues in the Ministry of
Local Government is an act of misplacement.
He
has noted that environment and local governance are two different issues, which
will be difficult to put together.
Mr
Katati has added that his organisation feels environmental issues are of
serious nature and they should have been placed together with land, water and
energy.
