74-year-old Michael Sata of the Patriotic Front is the President-elect for
the republic of Zambia.
This was after Mr Sata polled over a million votes to beat his closest
rival, the MMD’s Rupiah Banda in the 20th September presidential elections.
Mr Sata was declared winner by Chief Justice,
Ernest Sakala after polling 43 per cent of the vote with just seven
constituencies left to be counted.
In becoming the 5th republican head of state, Mr Sata polled 1,150,045 votes
in 143 constituencies.
Mr Banda on the other hand polled 961,796 votes representing 36 per cent,
giving the 2 front runners, a
difference of 188,249 votes.
And announcing the results, ECZ Chairperson, Ireen Mambilima stated that the
remaining unannounced votes from 7 constituencies did not warrant any challenge on Mr Sata.
All the listed 7 constituencies where the ECZ had not yet received results
are all in western province.
The respective The results also put the UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema 3rd with
489,944 votes representing 18.5 per cent, then the ADD’s Charles Milupi is 4th,
polling 13,382 votes representing 0.8 per cent.
Others are Elias Chipimo of NAREP with 10,190 votes at 0.4 per cent,
Tilyenji Kaunda with 9,713 votes, also with 0.4 per cent, Ngandu Magande of the
NMPP with 6,097 votes representing 0.2 per cent.
Edith Nawakwi of the FDD
polled 6,625 votes representing 0.3 per cent, Brigadier-General Godfrey Miyanda
with 4,358 votes representing 0.2 per cent and Dr Fred Mutesa with 2,191 votes
representing 0.1 per cent.
